A new Anderson Economic Group study commissioned by the Agriculture Transport Coalition estimates that one week of rail and port disruption could cost Canada's grain sector up to $540 million. The report says over 90 per cent of the impact comes from lost export sales, and that up to $112 million in sales can be lost before a stoppage even begins.
The findings support a campaign urging Ottawa to reform labour relations rules.
Missed export sales and buyer diversion can weaken Canadian basis and widen the discount for prairie grain. Repeated labour risk also raises the odds that Canadian supply is seen as unreliable.
