USDA's May 2026 Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook shows the US average retail dozen egg price fell to $2.25 in April, 62% below a year earlier. Table-egg output is rebuilding after about 151 million birds were lost to HPAI, but USDA cut its 2026 production growth forecast to 4.4% as hatching-layer inventories slowed.
A slower flock rebuild trims expected egg supply growth, which supports wholesale egg prices relative to earlier projections, though prices remain far below last year. Feed demand from layers is only modestly affected.
