Latin American stocks and currencies fell on Monday as the US dollar strengthened after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said recent data did not show a change in the US inflation trend and the Fed had more work to do. Traders added to bets on a September US rate hike, and the dollar rose 0.4% to a more than one-week high.
Colombia's peso dropped 1.56% and the MSCI LatAm index fell 1.06%.
A stronger dollar and higher US rate expectations tend to weaken emerging-market currencies, raising the local-currency cost of dollar-priced feed imports and pressuring Latin American buyers' margins. The effect on grain and meal prices is indirect and modest.
