Basis bids for soybeans loaded on barges for delivery to U.S. Gulf terminals eased on Monday, while corn bids were steady to lower. Traders said Mississippi River water levels south of St. Louis are starting to fall, and empty barge supply is tightening ahead of harvest.
USDA also confirmed a sale of 159,000 metric tons of U.S. soybeans to unknown destinations.
Falling river levels could force lighter barge loads and raise freight costs just as harvest volumes build, which supports Gulf basis and barge rates. Weaker barge bids for soybeans point to softer Gulf cash prices in the near term.
