Grain Workers Union members at six Vancouver grain terminals went on strike on a Tuesday in early October, halting bulk shipments of canola, wheat, barley and oats. The terminals handle about 52% of Canada's grain exports, and the Grain Growers of Canada estimated losses of C$35 million per day.
The union accused the employers' association of little effort in contract talks.
Halting roughly half of Canada's grain exports during peak autumn shipping pressures Canadian cash prices and canola meal supply to export markets. Buyers may turn to other origins, which supports competing prices.
