Workers at GrainCorp's Port of Newcastle walked off the job in rolling strikes after rejecting a pay offer they say is below the July minimum wage increase. The Maritime Union of Australia says it has had no contact with the company for over a week, while GrainCorp says it has tabled a comprehensive offer including a 12 per cent wage increase over three years.
Strikes at Newcastle could slow wheat and grain loading during the run-up to the new marketing year, potentially delaying Australian exports that compete with northern hemisphere supplies. Any prolonged disruption would modestly firm Australian wheat and grain export prices.
