The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act includes $829.1 million to expand and upgrade seven congested locks on the Mississippi River. Representative Cheri Bustos said the system handles about 60 percent of Midwest grain.
The funding was announced on January 19, 2022.
The funding is a long-term capacity project and will not change near-term barge rates or grain prices, but it may ease future river bottlenecks.
