The Florence Lauderdale County Port Authority plans dredging to allow year-round access to the Port of Florence on the Tennessee River in north Alabama. The port handles about 500,000 tons of cargo a year, including grain, steel, fertilizers and aggregates.
Its main terminal is operated by Tennessee Southern Railroad with rail links to CSX.
Year-round navigation at a small inland port adds capacity for grain and fertilizer movements in the Tennessee Valley. The effect on commodity prices is minimal.
