Informa Economics IEG, for the Soy Transportation Coalition, found that deepening the Lower Mississippi channel would cut soybean shipping costs from Gulf terminals by about 13 cents per bushel. The 256-mile stretch accounts for 60% of U.S. soybean exports and 59% of corn exports.
The report urges investment in multimodal transport infrastructure.
Lower Gulf shipping costs would improve the competitiveness of U.S. soybeans and raise farm-gate value without changing supply or demand. The gain would be realized only if the dredging project proceeds.
After 230 past neutral logistics events, Soybeans moved a median +0.4% over 5 sessions (55% higher; middle half -1.4% to +2.0%), and +0.1% over 20.
