Genetic analysis confirmed that the H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b genotype D1.1 found in a Wisconsin dairy herd came from a new wildlife-to-cattle spillover. The herd was the first HPAI detection in Wisconsin, reported by APHIS on December 14, 2025.
Sequencing was completed on December 17, 2025.
A new spillover into dairy cattle raises the chance of further herd infections and milk output losses. The scale so far is small and the price effect is limited.
