Soybean exports to China fell sharply after Chinese tariffs took effect in 2018, with soybeans losing more than 75% of export value to China between 2018 and 2019, according to a USDA report. Sales to China have since nearly recovered to pre-trade-war levels, with exports only 1% below 2017 levels in the year after the Phase One deal.
The recovery of China demand has eased the long-run price risk from the tariffs, so the retrospective picture is roughly neutral for soybean prices.
After 250 past neutral trade events, SOY moved a median +0.0% over 5 sessions (50% higher; middle half -1.4% to +1.6%), and -0.2% over 20.
