The IMF reports that spot natural gas prices have more than quadrupled to record levels in Europe and Asia, an unusually global and persistent spike. Brent crude recently hit a seven-year high above $85 per barrel as buyers switched to oil, and coal prices reached their highest since 2001.
The IMF expects prices to revert to more normal levels early next year.
Higher energy costs raise inflation and slow growth, while coal and oil substitution lifts fuel and power costs for agriculture and processing. The expected easing in early 2022 limits how long that pressure lasts.
