The Thai Trade Centre in Hong Kong said Thai jasmine rice prices rose 30.27% from January to March 2020 after panic buying. Rumours that Vietnam would cancel rice exports added to the hoarding, and Hong Kong limited purchases to one bag of rice per shopper.
The Thai Rice Exporters Association said the export price had risen to US$1,200 per tonne, compared with US$1,000 for competitors.
Expected export restrictions from India and Vietnam would redirect demand toward Thai rice and support its export prices. Hoarding in importing markets adds short-term upward pressure on rice prices.
