US natural gas prices rose to their highest level in more than 18 months as storage builds lagged normal patterns despite warm weather. Henry Hub prices for March 2017 were up about 11% since late September, and the futures curve flipped from contango to backwardation.
Slower storage builds point to a tighter winter balance, which supports higher gas prices and raises the cost of gas-fired power and energy-intensive feed processing.
After 74 past bullish report events, Natural Gas moved a median +1.3% over 5 sessions (55% higher; middle half -4.0% to +11.3%), and +2.1% over 20.
