A Pakistani business leader says surplus wheat stocks held by provinces and the federal government have reached a record 9 million tonnes, with half stored in the open. He says exports remain uneconomic because international prices are about half of local prices.
He calls for a new export policy and reduced wheat acreage.
Large unsold domestic stocks and weak export economics signal ample wheat supply in South Asia, which is bearish for regional wheat prices. Any policy shift toward exports could eventually add to world supply.
