Forest nations called on the EU to strengthen supply chain controls on commodities causing deforestation, including palm oil and cocoa. A delegation of 11 forest countries warned that global trade continues to harm forest peoples.
The FAO estimates 8.8 million hectares of natural forest were lost yearly from 2010 to 2015.
Pressure for tighter EU supply-chain rules could raise compliance costs and limit palm oil and related feed inputs, a mildly supportive factor for competing vegetable oils.
