Effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has followed conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The Middle East exports about 45% of global fertiliser supply, and urea prices have risen about 25% since the conflict began.
Australia relies almost entirely on imported urea, so supply shocks raise planting costs and risk availability for winter crops, which can feed through to grain and feed prices.
