Greenpeace and another NGO questioned whether President López Obrador will enforce his pledge to ban genetically modified products in Mexico. The skepticism follows his appointment of Alfonso Romo, a former Seminis CEO, as chief of staff and Víctor Villalobos, former head of the GM biosafety agency CIBIOGEM, as agriculture secretary.
A real GM ban, especially on corn, would threaten Mexico's large imports of US yellow corn for feed, a key price driver for US corn and DDGS. For now the pledge is unclear in scope, so the impact is limited to sentiment.
