USDA's Outlook Board projected 2019 beef output at 27.3 billion pounds, about 310 million pounds lower than its previous forecast, citing heavier cow slaughter and lighter carcass weights. The fed steer price forecast for 2019 was raised to $119.63/cwt, $1.13 above analyst expectations.
A smaller beef supply forecast combined with solid demand supports higher fed cattle prices. Lower beef output also reduces competition for protein in the feed-grain chain over time.
