China's animal feed industry, which relied heavily on American soybeans, is adjusting as the trade war escalates. A Qingdao feed executive said retaliatory tariffs lifted soybean meal prices by 100 yuan per ton to 2,900 yuan, raising final feed prices by about 40 yuan per ton.
African swine fever has further weakened feed demand since 2018.
Higher Chinese tariffs on US soybeans raise the cost of imported meal and cut US soy export demand, which pressures US soybean prices while supporting meal prices in China. Weaker hog-driven feed demand adds downside pressure on meal demand.
