A Commerzbank strategist says the ECB's recent comments on the euro amount to a currency war. The euro slid after Governing Council member Klaas Knot said the bank has tools to stop further gains that undermine inflation.
Officials then stressed that rate cuts are an option and said they will study whether the euro's rise reflects differences in stimulus versus the US.
