A group of NGOs warned that the EU deforestation regulation would miss most Brazilian deforestation if it excludes processed beef, hides and the Cerrado savannah. They noted Amazon deforestation hit a 12-year high in 2020.
They urged that all cattle products be included.
Exclusion of Cerrado soy and cattle products would leave much Brazilian supply outside EU rules, keeping export demand intact, while broader coverage would raise costs for Brazilian beef and soy.
