Rabobank's Global Animal Protein Outlook 2022 says protein producers face inflation in feed, labor, energy and freight in 2022. It projects North American beef production to decline, with US beef cow numbers falling 1.8% to 30.6 million head by January 1, 2022.
Lower US beef cow numbers and a 2.5% drop in slaughter point to tighter fed cattle supply, which supports cattle prices, while feed cost inflation squeezes producer margins.
