Mexico's Agriculture Ministry launched a strategy to prevent cattle screwworm from entering the country after detection in Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The plan includes Senasica collaboration, health barriers, information campaigns and activation of the national animal health emergency system, with tighter inspections at entry points since July 2023.
A screwworm incursion in Mexico would threaten live cattle movements into the US, and the tighter border controls could constrain feeder cattle imports and support US cattle prices.
