The yuan held near a 10-month high against the dollar as the PBOC kept its daily fixing firm, setting the midpoint at 7.1072, 209 pips stronger than a Reuters estimate. Analysts describe the gradual strengthening since May as a managed appreciation.
Analysts also said the yuan's gains are driven more by sentiment and policy guidance than by fundamentals.
A steadily managed yuan rise gradually lowers China's dollar-priced import costs, which could modestly support demand for feed commodities. Because the gains are policy-driven, they may reverse if sentiment shifts.
