CME live cattle futures settled lower ahead of cash trade, with February down 0.575 to 119.675 cents. Packers were bidding at $124-125/cwt in the southern Plains, and USDA data showed record December beef cold storage stocks of 567 million lbs.
Record beef stocks and softer futures signal weaker cattle demand and pressure on feeder cattle values, which can reduce feedlot demand for feed grains.
