A panel of shippers and carriers at IANA Intermodal Expo in Long Beach discussed the IMO 2020 mandate, effective January 1. They said it could raise ocean freight prices and reroute cargo, and questioned whether enough compliant fuel would be available in ports.
Walmart said it would accept only planned increases tied to cost and distance.
Expected IMO 2020 surcharges and possible rerouting could raise the cost of importing feed ingredients by ocean and change shipping patterns.
