Bloomberg analysis of USDA and vessel data found that at least 12 of 184 bulk and general cargo ships carrying US major grains have chosen the Suez route since late February. The Suez congestion may delay nearly 7% of seaborne US major grain shipments, with more than 80% of the affected cargo being corn.
Delays and rerouting around Africa tie up vessel capacity and raise freight costs for US corn exports, particularly to China and Vietnam. Shipment delays can widen US export basis and firm freight rates.
