High water on the Mississippi River is reducing barge cargo loads, with flood conditions affecting traffic up and down the river. Golding Barge Line's president says business has improved overall as more cargoes are moving, but high water limits how much each barge can carry.
The interview also notes flood damage to infrastructure such as dams and locks.
Reduced barge loads raise the cost and lower the volume of moving grain and feed ingredients on the Mississippi, which can widen basis and pressure barge freight rates. Buyers in river-dependent regions may face higher delivered feed costs while flooding persists.
