The Army Corps of Engineers says lock and dam service on the inland waterways is normal despite heavy rains. Soy Transportation Coalition's Mike Steenhoek says higher Lower Mississippi flows are forcing shippers to cut tow sizes by about 30%, or roughly 10 barges per tow.
Smaller tows raise per-ton barge costs and reduce capacity, which pressures Midwest basis and grain freight. Northbound movements against strong current are most affected.
