The Brazilian real strengthened about 1% on Tuesday after the central bank resumed currency intervention following a pause of over a month. The bank offered currency swaps, equivalent to dollar sales, to roll over February maturities, including up to $600 million of swaps due in May and July.
Central bank dollar sales via swaps add dollar supply that tends to cap BRL appreciation, which matters for Brazilian export competitiveness and the cost of dollar-priced feed imports. A firmer real can make Brazilian soybean and corn exports less competitive, a modestly bearish signal for global prices.
