Brazil's central bank unexpectedly sold dollars in two surprise foreign exchange auctions, its first intervention in three months. The real had weakened as much as 1.2% to a record 4.2765 per dollar, and the currency was down 0.3% on the day after the second auction.
The central bank did not disclose the amount sold.
A weaker real raises Brazil's feed and ingredient import costs and can push Brazilian exporters to sell more soybeans, corn and meal to capture better dollar returns. The central bank's intervention is an attempt to slow that currency slide.
