University of California, Davis researchers are testing black soldier fly larvae as a natural methionine source for organic poultry feed. The work responds to proposals by the National Organic Standards Board to phase out synthetic methionine from organic feed.
If organic certification drops synthetic methionine, demand for synthetic methionine in organic poultry feed could fall and insect meal could displace some soy and fishmeal, but the project is at an early stage and the affected volume is small.
