The USDA Grain Transportation Report says high water has disrupted barge traffic on the Mississippi, Ohio and Arkansas rivers, leaving year-to-date grain barge tonnage below the 3-year average and last year. The St. Louis gauge had dropped near 38 feet by May 15, allowing barges to resume transit.
Rail grain shipments were down year over year but had picked up recently.
Barge delays raise freight costs and slow Gulf-bound grain flows, which widens cash basis and supports transport-linked prices. Recovering rail volumes partly offset the river losses.
