The European Commission presented a proposed regulation on 17 November 2021 to curb deforestation and forest degradation linked to EU consumption. It covers cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, soya and wood, plus products made or fed with them, and would replace the EU Timber Regulation.
Exporters of soy, palm oil, cattle products and cocoa into the EU face new due diligence and geolocation requirements that could restrict market access and raise compliance costs, supporting EU premiums for compliant supply, though it is only a proposal still under parliamentary review.
