The European Commission proposed a regulation in November 2021 requiring mandatory due diligence so that products sold in the EU do not contribute to global deforestation. The package also includes a sustainable waste management proposal and a soil health strategy, intended to complement the Fit for 55 package.
Mandatory deforestation checks on soy, palm oil, beef, cocoa, coffee and wood could raise compliance costs and tighten supply of soy and palm oil into the EU, a modest bullish factor for those oils over time.
