The EU Deforestation Regulation came into force on 29 June 2023 and covers cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya and wood along with derived products. Companies must carry out value-chain due diligence to show goods do not result from deforestation or degradation after 31 December 2020.
The main compliance obligations apply from 30 December 2024.
Traders of soy and palm oil into the EU must prepare traceability systems ahead of the 2024 deadline, which could segregate compliant supply and add cost. The price impact depends on how much volume ends up excluded from EU demand.
