Analysts said the yuan's next move may depend on President-elect Trump's first press conference since July, scheduled for January 11. Trump had vowed to label China a currency manipulator and threatened tariffs of up to 45 percent on Chinese exports to the US.
The yuan had fallen to near eight-year lows after the election, mainly because of dollar strength.
Possible tariffs and currency-manipulation accusations would disrupt US-China trade flows, including agricultural purchases. Dollar strength and yuan weakness together raise the cost of dollar-priced commodities for Chinese buyers.
