USDA deputy chief meteorologist Mark Brusberg says the strong El Niño did not transition into the strong La Niña that many forecasters expected. Warming Pacific temperatures are instead producing a neutral weather pattern.
Brusberg notes that El Niño events are only about 60 to 80 percent predictable.
A weaker-than-forecast La Niña reduces the risk of a severe drought in South America and the southern US, which trims the weather premium in corn, soybean and wheat prices.
