A new Fern report, presented at a European Parliament event, argues that the EU Common Agricultural Policy fuels tropical deforestation through soy imports from South America used as animal feed. It calls for conditions on CAP payments so they support only socially and ecologically viable production.
Pressure to restrict soy feed imports tied to deforestation could eventually tighten EU demand for soybean meal from Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, but this is advocacy ahead of CAP reform rather than an immediate policy change.
