China's first-quarter soybean imports rose 20% from a year earlier, a pace twice that of 2010. Feed demand is rising as the country uses more soy-based feed after restricting imports of a corn-based alternative.
A private analyst expects 2016/17 imports of 91 million tonnes, above the USDA's record estimate of 88 million.
Strong Chinese import demand tightens the global soybean balance and supports soybean and meal prices, especially with the USDA estimate potentially too low.
