University of Illinois analysts summarized the January 12 USDA reports, noting a lower-than-expected U.S. soybean yield of 49.1 bushels per acre and a 2017 soybean production estimate of 4.392 billion bushels. December 1 soybean stocks were 22 million bushels below trade expectations.
A smaller soybean crop and tighter-than-expected stocks support soybean prices, which feeds into soybean meal costs for livestock feeders.
