Commercial traffic on the Mississippi River near Dubuque, Iowa and Illinois was halted after cracks were found in a miter gate at Lock and Dam No. 11. Temporary repairs were expected to take a couple of days, and the closure came less than two weeks after the river opened for the season.
Closing the lock blocks barge movement of grain upriver and delays shipments, which can widen Gulf-to-interior basis and raise barge freight costs while the closure lasts.
