Traders say China's 25% tariff on 106 US products including soybeans could lift palm oil demand in the short term, since higher Chinese soyoil prices narrow the price gap in palm's favor. Malaysian palm briefly fell more than 2% after the announcement before ending firmer and reaching a one-month high the next day.
Higher Chinese soyoil costs make palm a cheaper substitute, supporting palm prices, while US soy and soyoil are pressured by reduced Chinese purchases.
