Defra's first official estimate for the 2018 UK harvest shows wheat output down 5.1% from 2017 at 14.1 million tonnes and barley down 7.9% at 6.6 million tonnes. Both are below the five-year averages.
Spring barley yields fell 8.7% and oat area rose 7.8%.
A smaller UK wheat and barley crop increases reliance on imports and supports feed grain prices, particularly for barley-based rations.
