USDA data show Q4 2018 wheat shipping costs to Japan rose from Q3 and from a year earlier, with Kansas wheat at $96 per tonne and North Dakota at $101 per tonne through the Pacific Northwest. Higher ocean rates, rail costs and trucking demand drove the increases.
Higher freight costs narrow the netback for US wheat exports to Japan, which can weaken export competitiveness and wheat prices at origin.
