Chinese government data released March 15 showed the hog herd was 16.6% smaller than a year earlier in February, with the sow herd down 19.1%. USDA says China has reported 115 African swine fever outbreaks and roughly 1 million culled animals, and expects the total swine inventory to fall 13% by end-2019.
A shrinking hog herd cuts feed demand for corn and soymeal, which is bearish for those feeds, while tighter pork supply lifts hog prices and pushes China toward more imports.
