A CRS primer explains the marketing assistance loan program, which provides a floor price and interim financing for loan commodities. The 2018 Farm Bill extended the program through 2023 with higher loan rates for selected crops.
Higher loan rates set a higher effective floor for eligible crops, which can slow forced selling and support prices when markets are weak.
