Forest Trends welcomed the European Commission's plan on commodity-driven deforestation while criticising its reliance on voluntary partnerships. The group said the EU should move faster toward legally binding regulation of imports of palm oil, soy, timber and other commodities.
The advocacy push for binding import rules raises the prospect of future compliance costs for soy and palm oil supply chains, but the plan itself is non-binding and has no immediate price effect.
