The CFTC says Kraft and Mondelez paid $16 million after building a strategy to buy and take delivery of more than 3,000 wheat futures contracts, worth about $90 million, to create a false signal of demand. The settlement addresses market manipulation rather than supply.
The penalty is a regulatory matter with little direct effect on wheat supply or demand, so price impact should be minimal.
